What a tragic accident in which your uncle , Sydney Bennett perished. I don't know much more than what is contained in the post - I picked up the story from a post made on Facebook page "Royal Navy Ships & Submarines Past & Present". If you google HMS Unshaken there are a several web sites with information on the submarine including extracts from the log book. For some reason it did not appear on my blog - so I an reproducing the comment below:

Hi: I can't thank Jay and Nic Dorman enough for sharing the story of Frederick Dack's time on the HMS Unshaken (P 54) –and of course, you. For several years I've been trying to learn more about the events of August 12, 1942 only to get the same scant information repeated over various websites. I just need to say that Lt. Charles Ernest Oxborrow was the CO of the Unshaken from June 21, 1942 until his death on November 25, 1942.
uboat.net records this:
"25 Nov 1942
Late in the afternoon HMS P 54 (Lt. C.E. Oxborrow, DSC, RN) surfaced in the Gulf of Lyons in very heavy weather. P 54 then slid back to a depth of about 30 feet while the Commanding Officer and two lookouts were already on the bridge. They could not get below in time and were washed overboard. A search was made but they were not sighted again."
On Remembrance Day I take some time to think of him…
Uboat.net also states:
“12 Aug 1942 (position 58.37, 5.30)
HMS P 54 (Lt. C.E. Oxborrow, DSC, RN) torpedoed and sank the German merchant Georg L.M. Russ (2890 GRT, built 1938) off southern Norway in position 58°37'N, 05°30'E. Wolfgang L.M. Russ (3000 GRT, built 1939) was missed in the same attack.
One was killed, thirty-eight survivors were picked by the escort NS 02. UJ 1710 was sent to hunt the submarine but failed to locate it.”
There were NOT thirty-eight survivors.
In 2004, I videotaped my father’s recollection of that day and want to set the record straight.
My dad said there were thirty-two on board the Georg L.M. Russ. Seven survived. There had just been a shift change and their bunks were at the very back of the ship. That’s the only reason they survived.
I could only find four Georg L.M. Russ Killed In Action records: The Captain. The first officer. And two “1 Mar Bord Flak Abt”.
And there’s much much more to the Georg L.M. Russ story.
But I’ll leave you with this. My dad said that he, in Stavanger hospital (with a cracked pelvis from kicking the steel door open) and two of his fellows, were told they were lucky! Turns out the four others not injured were re-assigned and five days later, their ship (Wuri) hit a mine and sunk. All four of his buddies survived. My dad said they’d gotten quite skilled at jumping off ships!
Thanks again to Jay and Nic Dorman, you, and of course Frederick Dack.
Submitted from CanadaPhilip Cracknellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03742419743648086989noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8379962256741902605.post-50242476020596874702021-07-11T20:56:50.738-07:002021-07-11T20:56:50.738-07:00Yes, she caused some damage. Tragic about her CO and two of her crew being swept off the conning tower to their deaths - a submariner, this morning, told me they usually have harnesses on in rough seas.
